So I left for Sweden back on Saturday and after 21 hours in layovers and 17 hours in the air, I finally landed yesterday. Instead of writing up a whole ‘This is what I’m up to’ thing, here are just a few observations i’ve made along the way.
- Being in the military has its perks. Especially when you have a 7 hour layover in LAX and you realize they have one of the best USO’s in the country.
- I don’t have a kind word to say about JFK, aside from the Air Train was easy to use to get the hell out of there. From my plane leaving an hour late to them having us sit on the runway for 2 hours after we finally get on board to them having no USO that I could find (or that the staff had ever heard of), I have no desire to ever fly through there again.
- When flying into a city, I love looking to see the outskirts of it when they announce we’re making our descent. Going into LAX and JFK, it was all buildings, whether it was houses or factories or whatever. Flying into Stockholm, it was all forest, forest, lake, forest, building, forest, airport. It was much nicer to see. I later found out at dinner that Sweden is still 2/3rds forest, which is AWESOME.
- They say that if you want to know what your wife will look like in 30 years, look at her mom. Well I have nothing to worry about :)
- Swedes can drink! I had dinner with my fiance and her parents and brother last night. We started out with a dark Czech beer, took breaks to take drinks of Nubbe (basically spiced vodka they traditionally drink during meals like the herring and salmon we had) and then hit the second course where we had a couple glasses of wine and then after a short intermission, came back for dessert with more wine. I had a nice buzz going and all I had done was go to dinner! It was pretty sweet, not gonna lie :)
More randomness as it comes to me for the next couple weeks :)
